70's CHARITY ROCK CONCERT WAS A SELL OUT!!
By Dean Ashley.

The ravers were out in force on Wednesday night for this grand reunion concert at the arts centre. If you lived in or around
The idea for this event came from local entertainer Steve Travis who was the lead singer with one of the most well known and colourful groups from the era ?The mighty Plod'. Steve told us, ?Having turned fifty and lived a life in the music business I had started to write my biography and when I came to this early 70's period of my life I realised just how much fun it had been. The feeling grew that I would like to meet the band again. I tracked them down and spoke to them over the phone and suggested reforming the band for a one of gig. This idea was just over a year ago and grew into the event that took place last Wednesday. All the acts performed free of charge and all profits from the gig are going to the Teenage Cancer Trust registered charity. The event looks set to raise around £3000.
Doors opened at 7.30 and the Jeff Scott disco got the feel just right with a selection of 70's pop music. After a short welcome speech Steve Travis introduced the first act.
****************
The Amberlites.
This family band had reformed especially for this evening. Some of these musicians had packed their instruments away 25 years ago and confessed to being very nervous tonight. Once on stage these nerves disappeared and they soon had the crowd rocking with classic songs from the era. A great set and an excellent start to the evening, the audience were in the mood.
****************
Regatta.
Next up came Regatta. The band had reformed for this event and mixed in a couple of original songs along with the pop hits. The band were known for their tight harmonies and slick guitar work and tonight they delivered the goods again, it was if they had never stopped performing together. A set of songs that spanned the years and proved why this band in its various forms are still in demand around

*****************
Martin Newell.
After the hot pace set by the first two act it was time for a change of style and next on stage was Martin Newell. Poet and singer/songwriter Martin entertained in his inimitable style. Standing alone on stage with just his acoustic guitar Martin treated the crowd to songs from his many albums. These songs range in style but with his outrageous dress sense and witty banter Martin delivered in a true rock poet way.
With six bands to get on and off stage there was barely time for a break.
Steve Linton.
Local guitar legend Steve Linton arrived on stage with a brand new line up! This fantastic line up of musicians was the perfect foil for Linton to just what he does best and he chose to perform his own material to showcase that talent. Great songs delivered in a flawless set that made an impact on the crowd.
***************
Carl Seager and the Flying Heroes.
The capacity crowd were rocking and the atmosphere was electric when the next band arrived on stage. Billed as the Flying Heroes it was in fact Carl Seager who was the main man. He had his new band with him tonight consisting of three young ladies and they quickly proved that the girls can rock as good as the guys. Judging by the hoots and whistles from the crowd it was clear that Carl had many fans here tonight and no wonder. The first song was a no nonsense solid rocker and the crowd loved it. Carl played a couple of his older songs and two from his new CD, Aerodrome. This was the Seags of old, on stage in his torn denims...he knew what his fans wanted and he certainly delivered.

By the time this popular band left the stage the crowd were so hard against the front of the stage and it was difficult to believe that this was rock concert of
*******************
Steve Travis and the Mighty Plod.
Jeff's disco played a couple of tracks and suddenly the music ceased. The noise of the crowd grew quiet, loud heartbeats were coming over the PA system, you could feel the anticipation in the air. The heartbeats grew into a fanfare as the members of the Mighty Plod came on stage. The screams from the crowd grew as the band began the first song. Dressed in glam rock outfits and make up, this was Steve Travis and his band showing that old men can still deliver the goods. After the second song, which was the old classic 'Glad all over', Steve told the crowd, ?We are the older generation and its time to bring on the new... welcome on stage...our backing singers, the ?Naughty Daughters'. He then introduced three young ladies dressed in St Trinians outfits, who were in fact just that..his and Paul Sakal's daughters. The band burst into the song ?Delilah' and the crowd with arms waving, joined in the chorus. The last song was Hot love and it was clear that Steve had the audience in the palm of his hand when he told them it was their turn to sing. 400 people singing, or should I say screaming, the La la la la la chorus and Steve milked it for all it was worth. The music faded but the shouts for more did not subside.

To the delight of the crowd Steve asked, ?Do you want one more?' Silly question. With a nice touch Steve then thanked everybody involved and brought all of the nights performers back on stage for the grand finale, ?All you need is love', and there was plenty of that in the air tonight. It was a bit of a shambles but it did not matter. Nobody seemed to care because this was a great evening by anyone's standards.

All to soon it was over. It had been 30 years since those young glory days and for one night only, for a moment in time, they had returned. Old friendships had been rekindled and old grievances forgotten. This is how life should be. Don't leave it another 30 years.
?It was all that I had hoped it would be' said Steve. 'It was all so much fun, and we raised a lot of cash for a good cause as well.'
There is a specially produced 'Godfathers of Rock', 12 track CD (featuring all of the bands performing tonight) and a programme with info and pictures of the bands for sale. The CD is £5 and the programme, £2 available from Music Warehouse,
This is how Frankie and I described Godfathers of Rock on ukbands.net (my internet 2nd home, lol)...

I can honestly say last night was the best gig of my life! Seriously good fun and it ain't often Frankie looses her cool, lol. The crowd reaction took us totally by surprise and I've a feeling we're gonna have to go for this again next year. If you're interested to see what a bunch of old gits (and, of course, some rather up for it youngsters) look like when they're let out for the night, click the link under the pics...
Frankie travelled back from Newcastle Uni freshers week for the show...and I think she's glad she did, heheh...(she was definately the star of the show
)
As this was a charity do we didn't want to compete with the GoR CD so we did the next best thing. I think I managed to reach the mixing desk with one of the many Heroes CDs we frizbee'd into the 400+ crowd and as yet...no reports of injuries...
No pics of Amy as yet...the drum podium was so far back that we could hardly see her ourselves, lol. I've gotta say that although these girls are all relative newcomers to the scene, well, they're up there amongst the best Heroes I've had the pleasure to play alongside. This was only our 8th gig together and I've never had more confidence in a band...it's just me I worry about (and I didn't do too bad, heheh)

whoo! what an awesome night, that picture of me is pretty horriffic isn't it. oh well! I may be a bit of a newbie when it comes to gig-playing but last night was without a doubt one of the best nights of my life, even if we hadn't played! Mum and Dad said that if I never make them proud again, they don't care because last night was so amazing (on that note, Frankie gives Newcastle Uni the finger and rushes straight back to good ol' essex! - if only!) I am totally up for doing that again, any time! AT ALL! Any excuse to play with the Heroes again. We should do a christmas gig. Hopefully we'll get to play at the Arts Centre again cause it was so, so cool. Was unbelievably nervous beforehand though, took a good few red bulls to wake me up from the loong journey, then i wished I hadn't cause I couldnt stop bouncing... As you can tell from that rancid picture, I was having fun.
Carl, you were amazing, stop putting yourself down as always, you know we wouldn't be anywhere without you.
(P.S. Alex is a loon, but a legendary one. Did you notice him going berzerk in the crowd? Brilliant!)
Lots of love to all that came, am off now on a pub crawl around Newcastle, so I shall most certainly raise a glass to Seags, the man of the match!
(P.S. Carl, get on MSN!)

It's been a while, I know...we (Seags and Steve) have been up to our necks in it organising the Godfathers Of Rock gig. A compilation CD containing 12 tracks (two from each of the six bands, including Aerodrome and Unknown Boy from the Flying Heroes) will now be available to buy at the gig (£5 tbc), and also a souvenir 12 page programme (£2)...again, all proceeds to the TEENAGE CANCER TRUST. The gig's all set now and tickets are selling well. Hope to see you there!

Meanwhile...
The Colchester Castle gig was a great opportunity to introduce the new line up and those who attended tell me they had a great time...'course, they were largely our mates, lol. We loved it despite sound problems (monitors) on 'stage'. Apparently the band who were supposed to be on before (Spitfire) us took one look at the stage and refused to play. Okay, we were all expecting a stage and there wasn't one...or lights as it happens, but who cares! How often do we get the chance to use an 11th century castle as a backdrop! I wouldn't have missed it for the world and hopefully we'll get involved again next year (this was the first time Friday has been added to the Colchester Street Festival...so we'll have to wait and see if it will be repaeted).

Sun 21st Aug
Yet again, what a night! Hours of live music from four great bands (if I may venture to include the Flying Heroes amongst them, which I think I will, damn it
), a gathering of the best mates imaginable, a spattering of slightly drunken youths and a healthy spread of old rockers. And to top it all, as close to a real summer's night as we've had all year! Don't know what we've done to deserve it but last night was brilliant...thanks to every body who came, performed, cooked...whatever (by the way, FANTASTIC birthday cake courtesy of our friends Louise and Kevin Adams!) Thanks, too, to Liz Mullen who came along as a guest and spent a large part of the evening trying to track down a certain Godfather of Rock (heheh) for an interview for her BBC radio show (hint: Radio Essex...show goes out on Staurdays /end of hint). Thanks for your patience, Liz, and it was great to see you and Steve again.
Pat Coy
What can I say! Pat had us all glued...he means it when he plays and I was chuffed to bits to be invited up to do slide duty on Rocky Mountain Way with me old band mate. I LOVE that song. Cheers Pat!
Flying Heroes
Our first gig with the addition of Hazel Omahony on backing vocals and WOW, what a difference! It's great to have the vocals expand...adds the only ingredient that's been missing. Oh plus, of course, Hazel's harmonica solo in Aerodrome-I don't have to juggle with the harmonica/plectrum thing any more, yay! Superb job Hazel and needless to say Frankie and Amy did us proud yet again (I love this band!).
MaTrillion
Since Andy Trill spends a large proportion of his time touring with Fish, it seemed quite appropriate that he should name his own band MaTrillion...and it made me laugh so much I nearly fell off the four inch stage! I was proud to be playing alongside the legends that are Andy Trill and Pat Ibottson again, especially as we're the only Flying Heroes line-up (VII) who never actually gigged. Yep, last night put that right...thanks a million, MaTrillion! (sorry)
ZEN MOTEL
Bloody brilliant. How we managed to blag our way into getting this amazing band to play at our party will forever remain a mystery (well yeah, me and nephew Alex do go back a long way now, lol) It was great to see them selling their CD to a VERY appreciative audience. I was always a fan...I'm now a certified groupie. Superb.
Still More!?!
Yep, how proud was I at the Great Gig In The Garden to be playing alongside nephew Alex and my son Tom (drums)...so we thought we'd do it again. Ably assisted on bass by the indefatiguable Frankie. I dare say you can have more fun than this, but HOW? (I could remember the words, that's how, lol)
Special Guest Appearance...
Charlie came along as a guest and expressed an interest in giving us her instrumental rendition of Nothing Else Matters. So with the loan of Alex's guitar, and a hand from yours truly on bass and Tom on drums young Charlie did just that...to a delighted packed house. An amazing talent and a natural performer...hopefully she'll be back.

Amongst all the live music there was only time to play a couple of fill in CDs. Thanks to Reel Big Fish and Led Zepplin the hippy shall lie down with the...er....I'll have to think about that one...

Sat 13th Aug
Well yes, the heavens opened, but it didn't dampen the spirits one jot (okay...maybe just the one, lol). Thanks to an under cover stage and the yacht club's marquee type thingy all went well and the Flying Heroes did our bit along with Barry 'the man'. Good night all round and it was, shall we say, interesting to imerge from what appeared to be the very same smoke as that used on Stars In Their Eyes. That's one helluva machine Barry!

Sat 6th Aug
Stonkin' gig tonight. The girls were their usual awesome selves and even I didn't do bad! A real treat to play on the same bill as ex-Heroes Andy Trill and Pat Ibottson...their band was excellent and they couldn't have been more supportive (we used most of their gear, lol) Thanks again fellas...great night! Hope to do it again very soon
Looking forward to next week with Zen Motel!

Steve Pygott
I've just returned from Steve Pygott's funeral. He was a lovely bloke and I'm sure his family will have taken comfort from the number of people who turned out to pay their respects (I was amongst those standing at the back). Steve was a highly respected and admired partner, father, drummer and carpenter and his attitude to life was a lesson to us all. The rock music playing him out at the funeral summed him up a treat. You'll be sadly missed Steve.

Great Gig In The Garden update...
Guitarworks' first ever student, Alex Green, is rumoured to be showing his face and will probably be doing a number (if we can snatch two minutes to work something out, lol) Regular visitors to the Links page (regular 'Linkers' should seek help!...heheh) will have seen the link to his band ...

...it'll be great to have you along, Alex

Hazel (superb voice) has very kindly agreed to do lead vocal on several numbers. Many thanks, Hazel.
(hear Hazel's own song 'Apologies And Promises' here )
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Could you sing... 7 Nation Army (White Stripes) and/or Ain't Seen Nothing Yet (Bachman Turner Overdrive) on the day? You could! Excellent... please contact me
Siobhan/Liam & Frazer/Sabrina...don't worry, lol...we'll be fine without it would just help me out
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
BBQ: We will be having a bbq but please feel free to bring a picnic and/or anything you'd particularly like to drink/stick on the barbie (no drinks on the barbie, please, lol). The odd blanket to lounge around on during the foodfest might not be a bad idea. There'll be a fair few of us so we'll forgo the formal stuff and just see how it goes. We'll have plenty of cover in case of rain but heck, it's gonna be a gorgeous day!
Really looking forward to this...hope you all have a great time and those of you who are performing on the day (that's just about ALL of us, then)...remember everyone will be right behind you (look out! lol) and the idea is simply to enjoy yourselves.

Flying Heroes v DICARLO on Mixposure
Mon 30th May
All change...Heroes II are now The Flying Heroes!
It's been agreed that Andy's committments with FISH no longer allow him time for the Flying Heroes. The South American tour was a great success and we wish him well with the upcoming European tours/festivals. He's a great guitarist and a top bloke so we'll miss him...but he deserves his taste of the big time and he'll be guesting with the new Heroes occasionally. Thanks, too, to Pat Ibottson who has waited patiently for Andy's return only to be greeted with all this. Shame it didn't work out but we're sure to get together again in the future (I most cetainly owe you a pint!)
Right, that's the BAFTAs sorted...
So please welcome...

Amy and Frankie are something else!...catch them (and yours truly, of course) at the Guitarworks Great Gig in the Garden (G4 then)...26th June...and the Godfathers of Rock gig at the Atrs Center...28th September!

You'll find individual posts for the Flying Heroes, Heroes II, Voodoo Sun, Seags solo, 70s Reunion Gig, Guitarworks Party/Gig, etc. They'll obviously appear a little empty for now but with your help it's hoped that they'll soon be a hive of activity (and if, after 6 months, they're still looking like a ghost town, I'll slink off and disconnect them while nobody's looking)

So...how did it go?

Woah...what can I say!?! That was just one helluva night! Anton was amazing and Seags...well I can't say, can I...so this is what some of the other guys had to say...
"Excellent fun last night!! Seags was fantastic with his sidekick Anton. It was great to finally see him live."
Nathan Bennett (Beneva)
"...and I will say that Seags WAS brilliant- cos it's true and he can't say it... Voodoo Sun are going to do VERY well, they were polished and wonderful. "
Dave Richards (Blackfish)
Gotta say that Beneva, Blackfish and Kovak were all superb. Hopefully we can do it again soon...Seags

Give Peas A Chance!
Ever wondered what the REAL essence of rock is? Find out by taking a look at Ben Brown's (see Guitarworks Hall Of Fame) band...
Alfred and the Uber Peas...
video of their own composition...' Making Love To Concrete '. Absolutely brilliant, Ben! Alfred and the Uber Peas will be making an appearance at the Guitarworks Great Gig in the Garden in June...
Fri April 8th
The new Flying Heroes CD is very near production and will be available for sale through this site and at gigs soon. You can still download the kit and make it yourself (previous cover version) but nothing beats the real thing, does it...meanwhile, a sneak preview of the production cover...

Anton joins the bill!
Anton (Pace) will now be joining Seags (Voodoo Sun) at the Garage gig (3rd May) This is great news...I shall now enjoy the gig rather than just panic about it! Hopefully Anton will become a regular and the whole Voodoo Sun thing will take on a more positive form. You may recognise Anton from the 'Bands with Seags Connection' page of this site...pictured here with sister Kate (now one of Reg Web's 'Short People') in a press clipping from 1982.

The Godfathers of Rock bash (Sept 28th) will now be at the Arts Center. We've had alot of enquiries and were beginning to seriously doubt that 150 capacity would be enough...now we can revel in the task of going for it promo-wise. Keep an eye on the site for more info and...well, be there!
The Flying Heroes Video will probably be happening on 23rd April! This should prove to be an interesting shoot if the planned story board can possibly be followed (I know it can) Aerodrome will never be the same again! Collina from Purple Shirt Films is taking charge and trust me...she knows what she's doing. Both versions of the Heroes will be involved (assuming Andy's timed his FISH stuff right...please don't be in South America on Saturday!) along with a couple of special guest appearances (no lessons on day of shoot.)
Gotta go...more later

Flying Heroes featured on the front page of Mixposure in the 'What's Hot' panel with 'Velvetine Showgirl' (Voodoo Sun track).
Flying Heroes at No. 11 in the UKBands chart ...oops, down from 10...please vote ;-)...(see bottom of home page)
Voodoo Sun at No. 37 in UKBands chart ...bit of a leg up anyone? (as above)
Flying Heroes new entry at No. 24 in the AiiRadio.net chart with 'Aerodrome' (you'll vote for us over there too, if my dreams come true!)
Also, Simon at Gojangle radio has very kindly updated our Flying Heroes tracks...they are now same order as our set list so if you really wanna know what to expect if you come and see us just click the link! (Voodoo Sun also featured on Gojangle)
Pat is not to blame ! Okay, I've been rumbled...You may (or may not...as if!) have noticed that the drumming on newer Flying Heroes recordings such as 'Aerodrome' has a, shall we say, 'free' quality and some of you have been frank enough to enquire as to the origins of said 'freedom' (freedom from traditional drumming skills, that is.) Well, let's just say that during the formation of the new set/writing of the new material, the band consisted of, you've guessed it...Seags. So these are all solo BOSS BR-1180CD/Yamaha DD55 recordings...pre reformation of the band. I guess me and the DD55 are to blame then, although I do wish I'd had the use of the new bass drum peddle arrangement that I now use for recording (made possible by the kind donation of one of Patt's old pedals...see pic.)

Tues March 8th
Flying Heroes rehearsals are going great. Andy's got his new Twin Reverb to cuddle and Pat's found some sticks that don't fall to pieces...it's all good. All we've gotta do is make sure we're ready in time to fit in a couple of gigs before Andy goes atourin' with FISH...ARGHHH!!! But yes, he'll be back.
Heroes II also coming along a treat. Amy and Frankie are fine...it's just me! Nah, we'll be ready soon and we're also talking of doing an acoustic set a la...
Voodoo Sunn A maybe solo spot coming up in May...acoustic mix of Heroes/Voodoo...could be a new direction...we'll see..Also, as mentioned above, Frankie and Amy may be joining the Voodoo ranks, too. Could be one for Vagabonds...roll on summer!
Yours truly is now performing reviewing duties at MiXposure as well as UKBands...loads of great stuff going on at both. Maybe you should go take a look see.
